
1.0 INTRODUCTION
In line with the National Sanitation Day initiative instituted by the Government of Ghana to promote good Environmental Health and Sanitation practices, the Fanteakwa North District Assembly, in collaboration with key stakeholders, organized the third clean-up exercise in the Obooho township on Saturday, 1″ November 2025. The event was held in the first week of the month and had a massive patronage.
The exercise aimed at improving the sanitary conditions in our communities, thereby preventing communicable diseases, and sensitizing residents on proper waste management in accordance with the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851) and relevant sanitation By-laws of the District Assembly.
2.0 OBJECTIVES
To rid Obooho township of filth and environmental hazards.
To mobilize and engage residents in communal labour for improved sanitation.
To create awareness on the need for regular environmental cleanliness.
To achieve the Assembly’s efforts in ensuring compliance with sanitation regulations.
AREAS COVERED
Desilting of choked gutters along the main streets, lorry park and market centre.
Sweeping of principal streets and public places.
Collection, bagging and transportation of refuse to the final disposal site with the support of the Zoomlion Ghana Ltd.
Sanitation education by Environmental Health Officers focusing on household waste segregation, proper refuse disposal and enforcement of sanitation By-laws.
LEVEL OF PARTICIPATION AND STAKEHOLDERS INVOLVEMENT
Hon. District Chief Executive and staff of the Fanteakwa North District Assembly.
Market women, Traders and Transport unions.
Religious leaders, Youth Associations and Traditonal Authorities.
Honourable Assembly Members.National Disaster Management Organization staff
Zoomlion Ghana Limited staff
Security Agencies including the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service who assisted with coordination and safety.
CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
- Many drains and refuse collection points were heavily silted due to runoff water.
- All choked drains were desilted
- Some recalcitrant drivers ignored the directive not to operate until the exercise was over.
- Drivers were compelled to park their vehicles until the exercise was over.RECOMMENDATIONS
- The procurement of more sanitation logistics to enhance future clean-up activities.
- Continuous public education on waste management practices must be intensified on the community information centres, churches, mosques and schools.
- Striet enforcement of sanitation By-laws, with penalties for offenders pursued to sustain cleanliness.
- Regular monitoring and follow-ups would be intensified to maintain the sanitary gains.
- Stores to remain closed and other activities halted until the end of the exercise.CONCLUSION
The National Sanitation Day exercise held on Saturday 1″ November, 2025 in Obooho was successfully executed and met its intended objectives. The Fanteakwa North District Assembly acknowledges the efforts of all stakeholders and participants and reiterates its commitment to working with the citizenry in ensuring a clean and sustainable environment.
